2013 Farm Crawl coming up in October

Sunday, October 6th, 2013 from 11:00 am – 5:00pm

PELLA — The original, the biggest, the best - Farm Crawl happens in coming this fall!  This is seventh annual Farm Crawl. Last year’s Farm Crawl attracted over 1,000 visitors to our small circle of farms.  Tour eight independent family farms in south-central Iowa as they jointly host open houses this October 6th.  Enjoy a leisurely autumn day “crawling” from farm to farm.

Come visit south Marion County/north Lucas County (one hour south of Des Moines) to see each of our individual operations.  Tour the farms, visit the animals, meet the farmers, sample the goodies, opportunities to purchase locally grown & produced products, and lots of fun in the beautiful Iowa countryside as you drive yourself from farm to farm!  At several of the host farms will be guest area businesses and farms that produce fiber/yarn, photo cards, artisan beer, honey, pastry, wine, and pork.  Entrance to all of the farms is FREE (admission is charged to the corn maze at Dan-D Farms).  Special thanks to our major sponsor, Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI)!

Visit the Farm Crawl website at www.FarmCrawl.com for more details, maps and directions.  NO PETS - for the safety of our farm animals and guests, please leave your animals at home.  The eight farms include:

Blue Gate Farm (Jill Beebout & Sean Skeehan) - Certified Naturally Grown, chemical-free produce, pastured eggs, and honey bees benefit our CSA and markets.  Sample homemade jams, jellies and honey; guided tours of the gardens and season-extending high tunnels.  Guests: Peace Tree Brewing Co. (Knoxville), Aunt Louise’s Cinnamon Rolls (Russell), Glorybe Photo Cards (Columbia) and Still Waters Fiber Farm (Pleasantville).  Cookies & herb lemonade.

Coyote Run Farm (Matt Russell & Patrick Standley) - A 110 acre farm being rebuilt to profitability through relational marketing and sustainable agriculture with chemical-free produce & cut flowers, pastured poultry & eggs, hormone-free/ grass-fed and grain-fed beef, and mules. Self-tour the farm and high tunnel.  Refreshments available.

Which federal programs and policies succeed in being cost-effective and targeting those who need them most? These two tests are obvious: After all, why would we spend taxpayers' money on a program that isn't worth what it costs or helps those who do not need help?

  • Cats outsmart the researchers

I knew a lot had been written about dogs, and I assumed there must be at least a handful of studies on cats. But after weeks of scouring the scientific world for someone - anyone - who studied how cats think, all I was left with was this statement, laughed over the phone to me by one of the world's top animal cognition experts, a Hungarian scientist named Ádám Miklósi.

Your representative in the House is almost certainly on Twitter. Your senator definitely is. But how are they using the social network? Are Democrats more active than Republicans, or vice versa? Who has the most followers on the Hill?

  • Do your genes make you procrastinate?

Procrastinators, in my experience, like nothing better than explaining away their procrastination: General busyness, fear of failure, and simple laziness are just a handful of the excuses and theories often tossed around. Now researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder have added another option to the list: genetics.

The paper looked at how many delicious steamed sliders the minimum wage has been able to purchase over time. The point is that as it notes, in 1981, the $3.35 minimum could buy a whole dozen. Today, at $7.25, it could purchase just 10.

What's most interesting to contemplate is the effect becoming a grandmother will have on Hillary's ambition. It's one of life's unfairnesses that a woman's peak career years often coincide with her peak childbearing years.
