Wintry weather returns for brief visit

OTTUMWA — Forecasters say Friday’s weather in southeast Iowa will be changeable, with conditions shifting over the course of the day.

A look at the National Weather Service forecast for Ottumwa sums how sloppy the day will be. Freezing drizzle is expected to begin tonight for southern Iowa. That will change over to freezing rain in southeast Iowa. In Ottumwa, the freezing rain should be primarily before 10 a.m. Rain and sleet will take over from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the whole thing changing over to rain in the afternoon.

The rain will again mix with some sleet in the late evening, before changing to rain and snow between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. Snow is likely during the overnight hours until about 7 a.m. Saturday.

The forecast is similar for Centerville, though the NWS forecast for Saturday suggests things will be mostly sunny. Knoxville and Oskaloosa aren’t expected to see significant snow, but Pella could see up to 1-2 inches of snow Friday night.

Not much snow or ice accumulation is expected, but it won’t take much to make things slick. The NWS puts the total at “little to no ice,” while the Iowa Storm Chasing Network puts it at up to a tenth of an inch.
