Published July 22, 2008 12:22 pm - New legal services manual, legal hotline help disaster victims with questions The Oskaloosa Herald DES MOINES — The Iowa State Bar Association has released a Disaster Legal Services Manual to give victims of this summer’s disasters a starting point for answering their legal questions.
Available on the ISBA’s Web site at www.iowbar.org and at all FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers, the manual is presented in a question and answer format. Legal questions often asked by disaster victims are set forth followed by general answers. Because the answers by necessity must be general, victims should consult an attorney to obtain advice and counsel specific to the facts and circumstances of their individual cases. Victims may also call the Disaster Legal Services Hotline with specific questions related to their cases. The toll-free number, 1-877-775-8882, connects victims of this summer’s disasters with Iowa lawyers who are volunteering to answer disaster-related legal questions. Volunteer attorneys will represent the victims on a pro bono (free) basis so long as the legal matter is disaster-related and non-fee generating. The hotline number is answered during business hours Monday through Friday. Callers can also leave messages in the evening or weekends for an attorney to call them back the next business day. The Disaster Legal Services Manual was created by The Iowa State Bar Association with the help of Iowa Legal Aid and other attorney volunteers. The hotline was established by the Iowa State Bar Association and works in cooperation with the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, FEMA, the Polk County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project and Iowa Legal Aid. The hotline will remain operational indefinitely as long as there are victims who have legal questions. The Iowa State Bar Association is a voluntary organization of more than 7,900 lawyers and judges who are licensed to practice law in the state of Iowa. Oldest of the voluntary bar associations in the country, The ISBA has been in continuous operation since its founding in 1874.
