URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DES MOINES IA
725 AM CST THU FEB 23 2012

...HEAVY SNOW EXPECTED OVER PORTIONS CENTRAL TO NORTHWEST IOWA
TODAY...

.A STRONG AREA OF LOW PRESSURE LOCATED OVER NORTHEAST KANSAS AND SOUTHEAST NEBRASKA WILL CONTINUE TO TRACK EASTWARD ACROSSNORTHERN MISSOURI THROUGHOUT THE DAY TODAY. RAIN WILL TRANSITION TO ALL SNOWFROM NORTH TO SOUTH THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE MORNING INTO THE AFTERNOON HOURS. THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL WILL BE ACROSS NORTH CENTRAL TO NORTHWEST PORTIONS OF IOWA. STRONG NORTH TO NORTHEAST WINDS WILL DEVELOP BY THIS AFTERNOON AND LEAD TO BLOWING SNOW AND
REDUCED VISIBILITY AT TIMES INTO THIS EVENING.

* TIMING...RAIN WILL CONTINUE THROUGH MUCH OF THE MORNING BEFORE TRANSITIONING OVER TO SNOW DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS. THE SNOW WILL TAPER OFF BY LATE THIS EVENING.

* STORM TOTAL SNOW...TOTAL SNOW AMOUNTS OF 2 TO 5 INCHES.

* WINDS/VISIBILITY...WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO SHIFT FROM EAST THIS  MORNING TO NORTH NORTHEAST BY THE AFTERNOON AND INCREASE TO 15 TO 30 MPH. THESE GUSTY WINDS ARE LIKELY TO CAUSE VISIBILITY RESTRICTIONS OF LESS THAN A MILE DURING THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL THIS AFTERNOON.

* IMPACTS...CONDITIONS MAY QUICKLY DETERIORATE BY THE MID TO LATE
  AFTERNOON. TRAVEL WILL BECOME QUITE DIFFICULT AT TIMES.

    William Penn outlasted Dordt in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament in a two-overtime thriller.

  • Rockets claim 4 state titles; earn team crown

    Saturday night was a perfect night for the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont wrestling team.

    The Rockets had four wrestlers going for a state title and all of them came through in a big way.

    Jeren Glosser (138 pounds), Blake Marolf (145), Tucker Black (152) and Tyler Foubert (160) wrestled their way to state titles to help Coach Brett Little claim Class 1A Coach of the Year honors.

    Foubert recorded a reversal and a three-point near-fall in the final 23 seconds to get a major decision in his match with Kallan Schmelzer of Southwest Valley thata gave the Rockets a 5-point lead on Alburnett for the team title..

    Alburnett's Dylan Windfield was pinned by Dale Hilleman of West Marshall, thus awaerding the state title to the Rockets.

    Here's how The Herald area wrestlers fared Saturday

    Class 3A

    120 — Kyle Briggs, Cedar Rapids Jeferson, dec. Skylar DeJong, Oskaloosa, 5-3, in seventh-place match. Finished 34-11 and in eighth place.

    182 — Sam Cook, Fort Dodge, dec. Mason Wisse, Oskaloosa, 4-0, in consolation semifinal Saturday. Wisse pinned Calvin Buchanan, Sioux City East :37 in fifth-place match. Finished 39-4 and in fifth place.

    Class 1A

    138 — Jeren Glosser, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont dec. Travis Cole, Highland Riverside, 6-2 in final. Finished 49-1 and is state champion.

    145 — Blake Marolf, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, dec. Bryce Paul, Alburnett, 7-1 in final. Finished 38-2 and is state champion

    152 — Tucker Black, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, dec. Noah Irons, Lake Mills, 4-2 in final Saturday. Finished 44-3 and is state champion.

    160 — Tyler Foubert, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, maj. dec. Kailan Schmelzer, Southwest Valley, 14-3 in final. Finished 42-4 and is state champion

    170 — Gavin Gremmel, Clarinda Academy, maj. dec. Dillon Pigsley, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, 14-2 in consolation semifinal; Ryan Hageman, South Winneshiek, dec. Pigsley, 4-3 in fifth-place match. Finished 37-9 and in sixth place.
